Article Title: Samsung bets big on flexible OLED for future iPhones and foldable devices

URL: Technobuffalohttp://www.technobuffalo.com/?p=811583

Synopsis:

  • Samsung is already dominating the OLED market, reportedly providing 95 percent of the OLED displays shipped in the first quarter of 2016. Now the company is making a big investment in flexible OLED in an effort to meet growing demand for the trendy material.
  • Business Korea reports that the South Korean giant is selling off some of its LCD production lines while it converts others to produce flexible OLED instead. Samsung already invested 2 trillion won (roughly $1.7 billion) in the components earlier this year. Now it’s apparently set to spend another 3 trillion won ($2.56 billion) by the end of 2017.
  • Samsung reportedly expects demand for flexible OLED to increase quickly as more companies start using it in their devices. The company recently said its first foldable devices are “right around the corner.” Even Apple is rumored to adopt the technology within the next few years, which could really jump-start the market.
  • Samsung’s flexible OLED is already used in its curved-screen devices like the Galaxy S7 Edge. As the material becomes more readily available and less expensive we may see even more companies offer similar handsets, though it’s still unclear which firm will be first to release a truly foldable smartphone.

Article Title:Samsung May Release Phones With Bendable Screens in 2017

URL: Bloomberg Technology http://bloom.bg/1UgVLio

Synopsis

  • Samsung Electronics Co. is considering introducing two new smartphone models that will feature bendable screens, including a version that folds in half like a cosmetic compact, people familiar with the matter said.
  • The devices using organic light-emitting diodes could be unveiled as soon as early 2017, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private. That would likely give it a head start on new Apple Inc. iPhones. The second Samsung model will have a 5-inch screen when used as a handset, that unfurls into a display that’s as large as 8 inches, similar to a tablet, the people said.
  • This product could be a game-changer if Samsung successfully comes up with a user interface suitable for bendable screens,” said Lee Seung Woo, an analyst at IBK Securities Co. in Seoul. “Next year is a probable scenario. Their biggest obstacle was related to making transparent plastics and making them durable, which seems resolved by now.”

Article Title:  Solar canopy allows even the most crowded city roof to go solar

URL: Treehugger.com http://bit.ly/1W6lRE5

Synopsis

  • In addition to large solar farms in rural areas, distributed rooftop solar power is incredibly important for the most populated areas to move to clean energy.
  • The engineers at Brooklyn Solar Works have found a way around that by raising the solar panels above the rooftops with a solar canopy.
  • If you want to lay solar panels flat on the roof, you really dont have a whole lot of usable space, says T.R. Ludwig, co-founder of Brooklyn Solar Works to Fast Co Exist.
  • Outside of cities, homes have sloped roofs causing the solar panels to sit at an angle, which maximizes the amount of sunlight they can capture.
  • The company takes measurements of each roof and plugs them into design software that generates a custom design for each building.
  • The canopies rise above the height needed to meet the fire codes and leaves the roof space open, so the company says that the system makes it easier to get the solar power systems approved by the city, a process that is often complicated and lengthy.

Article Title:Pop-up emergency shelters fit into a shipping container

URL: Treehugger.com http://bit.ly/1W6m2iR

Synopsis:

  • 16 Humanihut shelters can fit into a single shipping container, and each one can be set up in about 5 minutes, allowing for rapid and dignified relief for refugees.
  • Humanihut, a South Australian startup, developed its all-in-one emergency shelter solution over the course of about three years, and instead of just merely providing walls and a roof for refugees and disaster victims, the system also includes other basic necessities, such as toilets and showers, electricity, and laundry facilities.
  • 16 of the Humanihut shelters fit into a standard shipping container, which allows them to be easily transported and deployed using existing shipping infrastructure, and then erected in just minutes each, with an entire village able to be built in just a few hours.
  • Insulated panels are integrated into the steel walls and roofs of the units, which enable the residents to maintain a comfortable living temperature in both hot and cold climates, and the robust construction of the units is expected to allow them to last for up to 20 years, which is much longer than the standard tent shelters that many refugees receive.
  • Each Humanihut, which measures 7.3 meters long by 2.4 meters high, includes solar panels on the roof, wiring for 110V outlets, tables, benches, sink, water purification, and heat, and can be collapsed down to 30 cm high to fit into the shipping container. This allows for the units to be erected and deconstructed quickly, with a small team of people and a forklift able to build one in about 5 minutes, and an entire system of 16 shelters and one "Ablutionhut" (hygiene facility) can be constructed in about 1.5 hours, according to the company. Each unit can sleep up to 6 people, and offer security, privacy, and convenience for both the short- and long-term.

In this episode Jonathan and Shay discuss:

URLS: http://engt.co/23evx0x,http://read.bi/23evQZ5, http://onforb.es/21oOLin, http://wp.me/p1FaB8-5BPX

Synopsis

  • Apple Confiremed that it’s giving you the power to drop native mobile apps on ios 10, when it published its official support page detain the features for beta testers
  • What the page didn’t mention is that you can’t really delete stock apps, you can only remove them from your home screen .Apple points that its pre-loaded apps use less than 150MB and don't take up a big part of your storage space.
  • By the way, Apples support page also gives you the rundown on some possible complications when you remove certain programs. For instance, if you try to remove the Watch app while its paired with a smartwatch, iOS will prompt you to unpair it first.
  • You can finally take the iPhone's native apps off your home screen, like Mail, Safari, Maps, Stocks, and so on.
  • The clock app is now dark, which means no more blinding brightness when adjusting your alarm at night or in the morning.
  • A new redesigned notifications shade that could actually be useful.
  • The notifications shade in previous versions of iOS is notoriously bad at showing notifications and hard to manage, but it looks like it could look a lot better in iOS 10.
  • You can finally clear ALL your notifications with 3D Touch.
  • You'll be able to use 3D Touch in way more places than before, like the notifications shade, the control center, and eventually third-party apps, which should help you actually use 3D Touch if you haven't been already.

  • Widgets will let you see some basic information from apps like weather, your calendar, and news, so you don't have to open them all the time — just like on Android!
    • Alongside the notifications upgrade, iOS 9 users will find iOS 10 also treats widgets differently. Apple has removed them from the notification bar and instead switched them to both thelockscreen (accessible via swipes left or right), Spotlight and some app icons themselves (see below).

  • Searching for a specific photo among your thousands of photos will be so much easier, like that one photo where you're riding a horse in a lake by a mountain.
  • The new Raise To Wake feature that wakes your iPhone when you raise it up will let you read your notifications before using TouchID.
  • The Phone app in iOS 10 will transcribe your voicemail so you don't have to listen through voicemails anymore, which can take longer than simply reading it.
  • You can finally see how you look before sending a selfie to someone with the new iOS 10 Messages.
  • Apple is finally opening up Siri to developers with iOS 10. This means users will be able to use voice controls to make VoIP calls, send messages with third party apps like WhatsApp or even hail cabs (Apple demoed this with Uber). Depending on developers’ imagination, the sky’s the limit here – though again it is another Android catch-up feature.
  • iMessage Overhaul
    • Apple made a huge deal about messaging in iOS 10 and it is one of the biggest changes users will find when they upgrade from iOS 9.
    • In truth the changes are mostly cosmetic but they should prove fun with more “personal and expressive” options like balloon animations, handwritten notes, loads of new emoji, gif libraries and ‘invisible ink’ (including hidden and self erasing messages). Users will also be able to watch videos directly within iMessage.
  • Apple brings a lot of its Photos app in line with the much acclaimed Google GOOGL +13.05% Photos in iOS 10. Just like it, users will get a ‘Memories’ tab that automatically picks out photos and trips to make collages, videos and slideshows. It will also be able to recognise photos so users can search by location or description (eg ‘Berlin’, or ‘Beach’) to filter shots.
  • One key difference in Apple Photos is this all takes place on your phone, while Google Photos uses the power of the Cloud. For some this extra privacy will give Apple the edge but many won’t care either way.
  • With iOS 10, Apple Maps is getting ever closer to becoming a credible Google Maps alternative. Aside from a tweaked UI (larger buttons, cleaner typeface), it can now scan your calendar and recognise your routine automatically (think how Google Now integrates with Google Maps).
  • Apple Maps now supports mid-route stops and searches and much more.

  • Apple Maps can also now match Google Maps’ ability to locate gas stations, restaurants, etc on route and how stopping at one will affect your arrival time. It has integrated with third party apps as well like Openable OPEN +% and Uber so you can book a restaurant or call a cab without leaving Maps.
  • Good news, iPhone-toting photo lovers: RAW photo shooting support is coming to iOS 10.

  • (Wondering what the heck a “RAW” photo is? It’s any file type that stores an image in its rawest form, sans compression and pre-processing. The upside: you’ve got a lot more data to work with, allowing for a much greater degree of editing flexibility in post processing — hence why pro photographers tend to shoot in RAW. The downside: the files tend to be pretty damned big.)

  • Third party developers will be able to shoot and store raw photos, but it’s something they’ll have to add to their apps — it won’t just suddenly start working across all your apps when you update to iOS 10.
  • It’ll work with the rear camera only
  • As with many DSLRs, iOS can handle shooting in RAW and JPEG simultaneously
  • It’ll be available to apps running on the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE, and the 9.7” iPad
  • RAW photos will be stored in Adobe’s Digital Negative (DNG) file format
  • Alas, no word yet on if/how Apple plans to support RAW photos within their own Camera app.

Article Title: Pepper Robots Start Working in Belgian Hospitals

URL: http://for.tn/1ULPPeh

Synopsis

  • Two hospitals in Belgium will start on Tuesday using Softbanks Pepper robots to help visitors when they arrive at reception.
  • The hospitals CHR Citadelle in Liege and AZ Damiaan in Ostend will use the Pepper bots to provide an alternative, fast and connected initial contact and to help hospital reception staff in a user-friendly manner, a spokesperson for Zora Bots, the Belgian company which is developing the software for the robots, told Fortune.
  • In practice, when someone arrives at one of the hospitals, they will be able to tell Pepper that they have an appointment with a certain doctor at a certain time, and the robot will either give them directions for getting to the doctors rooms, or walk them there.
  • The wider world is probably most familiar with Pepper from an incident in Japan last year in which a drunken man beat up one of the robots in a Softbank store.
  • That helpdesk, along with Zoras technical expertise in developing new applications for the robot, explains the relatively high cost of this version of Pepper.
  • It costs €30,000 ($34,000), while Softbank usually sells Pepper for under $1,700.
  • Pepper robot at Citadelle Hospital in Liège, Belgium.

Article Title: Amazon ware house robots

URL: http://wp.me/p2G6tR-2YAd

Synopsis:

Amazon acquired Kiva for $775 million in 2012 but only started using the orange robots in its warehouses in late 2014. The deal was expected to make inventory management more efficient. It’s now beginning to become clear by how much.

The “click to ship” cycle used to be around 60-75 minutes when employees had manually to sift through the stacks, pick the product, pack it, and ship it. Now, robots handle the same job in 15 minutes, according to a Deutsche Bank note published Tuesday (June 14) based on Amazon’s metrics.

These robots are not only more efficient but they also take up less space than their human counterparts. That means warehouse design can eventually be modified to have more shelf space and less wide aisles. At the end of the third quarter of 2015, Amazon was using 30,000 Kiva robots across 13 warehouses. Each Kiva-equipped warehouse can hold 50% more inventory per square foot than centers without robots. In turn, the company’s operating costs have been sliced by 20%—or almost $22 million—per warehouse.

If Kiva robots are dispatched to the rest of the 110 Amazon warehouses, the tech giant could save almost $2.5 billion, according to Deutsche Bank. However, since it takes $15-$20 million to install robots in each warehouse, the one-time savings is expected to be closer to $800 million. “In our vision for Amazon’s future fulfillment footprint, we see Kiva robots playing a much bigger role in improving efficiency if mega-fulfillment centers are deployed in Asia,” the bank’s analysts wrote.

Amazon has its own grand vision for robots. The company is trying to find ones that can carry out more diverse and advanced tasks. Perhaps ones that can sort and fill orders on their own, deliver those orders, and even understand orders placed by humans. The Deutsche Bank note urges Amazon to switch to self-driving trucks because labor makes up almost 80% of the $4,500 it takes to transport a full trailer of products from the west to the east coast in the US.

Still, warehouse workers don’t need to fret about being replaced quite yet: Amazon is still hiring.

Article Title: This sleek leather wallet has a hidden iPhone charger

URL:mashable.com/http://on.mash.to/1PyvQeR

  • Synopsis:
live in a constant state of fear that my iPhone will run out of juice. I keep charging cables all over my house, I always scan cafes and airport lounges for available power outlets, and I almost never leave the house without a spare Mophie. I'm basically the Bill Hader character from that T-Mobile commercial from a couple of years ago.
  • Yes, I've read all the tips on conserving smartphone battery life, but I find few of them to be that sustainable if you really want to use your the device like it's supposed to be used. But the need to constantly carry spare batteries is a real pain — just check my busted pockets.
  • Here's an idea: How about putting a battery in something I'm carrying around anyway. That's exactly the idea behind the Nomad Leather Wallet for iPhone, which hides a decent-size battery, complete with Lightning cable, within a chic leather wallet.
  • The designers of the Nomad lent me one of their battery-hiding wallets, and I've been using it for the past week. The wallet I have is the larger bifold style, which costs $149.95 and has slots for six cards as well as cash. Nomad also makes a smaller "Slim" version for $119.95. Both are genuine leather and contain a 2,400 milliamp-hour (mAh) battery. (By comparison, Apple's Smart Battery Case has 1,877 mAh.) There is no microUSB version of the wallet, at least not yet.
  • As a wallet, the larger Nomad is on the big side for my taste (I'm probably a target customer for the Slim), but it's a fine piece of hide, tan in color, smooth in texture and precise in craftsmanship. The battery itself is basically the rod the wallet folds around. It doesn't add much weight, and unless you point it out to someone, they probably wouldn't notice (thought they might wonder what the microUSB port and tiny button are for). The Lightning cable tucks neatly between the card slots.
  • If I'm being honest there's not much to review here. The wallet is a nice wallet. It's probably more than most would pay for one, but the it's unquestionably stylish. And the battery has enough juice to charge your iPhone 6S fully (and your iPhone 6S Plus by about 60%), and it takes about two hours to fully do its thing.
  • But the details and functionality of the Nomad wallet don't really capture what it offers: peace of mind. Having a robust battery on you at all times means using your phone while out and about isn't a constant game of dimming the screen and toggling Low Power Mode. That goes double for iPhone 6 users like myself, since we have smaller batteries than Plusers and those batteries are mostly getting old and less able to hold a charge. For us, the Nomad is seriously a weight lifted — literally and figuratively.

Article Title:Cerevo’s recently-announced tipron is the robotic cyclops of projectors

URL: Digital Trends http://www.digitaltrends.com/?p=897422

Synopsis

  • There are some things in life, like Sphero’s much lauded BB-8 toy modeled after everyone’s favorite droid from The Force Awakens, that we definitely don’t need but actually really want. They quench our thirst for next-gen technology — and in the case of the previous example, our inner child — allowing us to revel in a product that’s not nearly as vital as it is luxurious. The recently-announced CerevoTipron isn’t quite one of these, but it comes close, once you get your head around the fact that it even exists to begin with.
  • Japanese manufacturer Cerevo has high hopes for the Internet-connected machine, however. It functions as a transformable smart projector that can automatically beam an 80-inch screen on your wall, and can do so at a distance of less than three meters away. When needed, it folds up and casually rolls about the floor on your command kind of like a Roomba, adhering to any manual directions you feed it via the companion app for Android. A simple press of a button triggers the projection mode, which extends the Tipron’s projection head and gives you quick access to angle and keystone changes.
  • The fact that the projector unit can adjust roll, pitch, and yaw is only secondary to what it can project. The Tipron can handle everything from individual video files to YouTube channels, with the ability to access Twitter, your calendar, the news, and a wealth of other content where and when you want it. The projector can also remember specific locations in your home, and return to them on its own using the embedded camera at its top. Then, it’s simply a matter of picking your content from a list of options housed within the app, which will likely expand with streaming services and other types of content as time goes on. An HDMI input just gives you a means to connect your video game console, PC, or other media device until then.

In this episode Jonathan covers:

Synopsis:

  • Drone prototypes touted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January 6 to 9, 2016.
  • Flying drone taxis have become a real possibility after getting the green light from the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems for test flights above the state.
  • The buzz about flying drone taxis emanates from the intelligent aerial vehicles developed by Guangzhou-based companyEhang and exhibited at the C.E.S. Ehangs 184 drone has been approved for testing conditional on the NIAS meeting the requirements for such an activity in the coming months.
  • The fact is, the Nevada trials dont mean airborne drone taxis will be dropping from the skies anytime soon to pick up passengers as per sci-fi films like Bruce Willis The Fifth Element .
  • Passengers who board the flying drone taxis are required to enter their destination on a 12-inch touchscreen in front of the seat, and leave it to the drones on-board computer to work out the best route.
  • The Guardian reports that aside from the NIAS, Ehang has also partnered with the Nevada Governors Office of Economic Development to put the flying drone through testing and regulatory approval.

Article Title: US Navy Develops Iron Man-Style AR Diving Helmet

URL: pcmag.comhttp://bit.ly/1U7XLcX

Synopsis:

  • Engineers at the US Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, Florida, are developing a new diving helmet so futuristic it might seem straight out of Iron Man.
  • The team, led by Underwater Systems Development Project Engineer Dennis Gallagher, took inspiration from Tony Stark and put a high-resolution, see-through head-up display (HUD) directly inside a diving helmet. Dubbed the Divers Augmented Vision Display (DAVD), the system lets divers view in real time "everything from sector sonar [showing their location in relation to the dive site], text messages, diagrams, photographs, and even augmented reality videos" right inside their helmet.
  • Navy Divers Augmented Vision DisplayHaving this information within eyeshot offers divers a number of benefits, the team said. For starters, it can increase safety for divers out on missions, providing greater situational awareness and more accurate navigation to a target such as a ship, downed aircraft, or another object of interest. Plus, instead of having to rely on pre-dive briefings alone to determine what they're looking for, how items should appear, and where they're located, the system places this information right in front of their face. Inside the helmet, this information looks like a point-of-view video game display.
  • "By building this HUD directly inside the dive helmet instead of attaching a display on the outside, it can provide a capability similar to something from an Iron Man movie," Gallagher said in a statement. "You have everything you visually need right there within the helmet."
  • The system could be used for all types of diving missions, including underwater construction, salvage operations, and ship repair. Eventually, it could also potentially be used by first responders and commercial divers.
  • The Navy is also in the process of developing enhanced sensors that will let divers see underwater in higher-resolution, even when visibility is "near zero." In the future, this enhanced underwater vision system could be fed directly into the DAVD. the team expects to start testing the DAVD in October.

Article Title:  Buying a TV? Here are 11 things you need to know

URL: Timsguide.com  http://bit.ly/1WIxceA

Synopsis:

SD 720x480, Full HD 1920x1080, 4k 4096x2160

Important: HDMI 2.0 to accommodate future Ultra HD sources

  • Don’t buy a TV with less than 1080p resolution (i.e. avoid 720p sets).
  • SD 720x480, Full HD 1920x1080, 4k 4096x2160
  • Don't buy a TV with less than a 120 Hz refresh rate.
  • Consider a 4K Ultra HD TV if you want your TV to be acceptable five years from now.
  • OLED TVs look much better than a typical LED LCD, but they are considerably more expensive.
  • For state-of-the-art models, look for an HDR-compatible set, which offers more realistic colors.
  • Ignore contrast ratio specs: manufacturers fudge the numbers. Trust your own eyes.
  • Look for at least 4 HDMI ports; 4K shoppers should ask about HDCP compatibility.
  • Curved TVs are a fashion statement. They don’t benefit image quality.
  • Most TVs are “smart TVs” these days. Don’t be tricked into thinking this is a big deal.
  • Plan to buy a soundbar. TV speakers are worse nowadays because the screens are thinner.

URL: androidcentralhttp://www.androidcentral.com/node/54998

Synopsis

The GS7 Active almost should be called something other than GS7. The look and feel of the two phones couldn't be much more different. Metal and glass gives way to something that's much more plastic

It's also a good bit bigger in all respects. Taller, wider, thicker. It weighs more. But Samsung's done all this in a way that doesn't make the phone feel ungainly or huge. "More robust"

All three phones in the GS7 class are rated IP68 for dust ingress and water immersion. That means it can spend up to a half hour in 5 feet of water, without suffering any ill effects.

As some folks have learned the hard way, that means a bath. A quick soak. Not a prolonged shower.

  • When it comes to quality smartphone cameras, megapixels (MP) aren't the end-all, be-all. The industry standard on high-end phones today is somewhere between 12MP and 16MP. For example, the iPhone 6s has a 12MP rear-facing camera, while the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and Note5 both have 16MP shooters. The two new Google Nexus phones have 12.3MP cameras.
  • DROID 2 Turbo supports memory cards up to 2TB, but …
  • Motorola offers 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage in the Turbo 2, and the company says it can use microSD cards up to 2TB. However, that's kind of a moot point, because the largest widely available card on the market today is 200GB

Article Title: People Cannot wait to pay $800 for a laundry-folding robot

URL: Quartz.com http://wp.me/p2G6tR-2Weo

Synopsis

  • Its a pricey answer to a routine chore, yet folding laundry is evidently so odious that the Foldi Mate is attracting serious attention, the Wall Street Journal reported.
  • The Foldi Mate cant handle underwear or oversized items, such as bed sheets, and items to be folded need to be clipped on one-by-one.
  • Even though some people might find it superfluous, for families it could make the difference between wasting an entire day doing laundry and actually getting to go outside and play with their children, Foldi Mate said in a statement.
  • Yet some people do find folding laundry so tedious that they would spend almost $1,000 on a machine to do it for them.
  • Laundroid, by Japan-based company Seven Dreamers, is a folding machine about the size of a refrigerator, and unlike Foldi Mate, you just dump your clothes in it

Article Title: High-powered ‘drone freezing ray’ gets airport trial

URL: http://metro.co.uk/http://wp.me/p2Vnvc-oPEm

Synopsis

  • The US government’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is trying to find tech that can detect small, unmanned aerial vehicles that are flying around airports, because of their potential use by terrorists and smugglers.
  • Now they’re trialling the Anti-UAV Defence System (Auds), which was developed by three British companies – Enterprise Control Systems, Blighter Surveillance Systems, and Chess Dynamics.
  • First a thermal imaging camera will allow the Auds operator to target a specific drone.
  • Then, once the drone has been located, a high-powered radio signal is activated. This jams the drone’s signals, making them unresponsive.
  • In a statement released last year Graham Beall, managing director of Chess Dynamics, said: ‘Countering drones is now a global issue and an increasing concern for the military, government and homeland security forces across every continent.
  • ‘It’s expected that unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) will be used increasingly for malicious purposes as they can carry cameras, weapons, toxic chemicals and explosives and are being used increasingly for terrorism, espionage and smuggling purposes.’
  • The FAA has not yet announced which airports will trial the ray.

Article Title: Dutch police train eagles to snatch enemy drones

URL: reuters.comhttp://reut.rs/1r40bM4

Synopsis

  • Dutch police puzzling over how to remove drones that pose a public safety threat are testing a way to get the job done in one fell swoop - with trained eagles.
  • "It's a low-tech solution to a high-tech problem," spokesman Dennis Janus of the country's national police said.
  • The idea arose because amateur use of drones has boomed and police have begun to worry about unlicensed drones flying into off-limit spaces around airports or above public events such as politician's appearances.
  • Possible solutions the Dutch police have studied include shooting nets at the offending drones, remotely hacking them to seize their controls - or taking them out with birds of prey.
  • Showing off the technique in a video released by police, a four-propeller drone hovers in the middle of a warehouse, colored lights flashing.
  • Released by her keeper, a white-tailed eagle glides straight toward the drone, clutches it easily in her talons - clack! - and drags it to the ground.
  • They are rewarded with a piece of meat after each successful foray.
  • Their scaly talons are strong and tough enough to seize most consumer-grade drones without injury from the blades, he said.
  • "These birds are used to meeting resistance from animals they hunt in the wild, and they don't seem to have much trouble with the drones," he said.
  • The potential impact on the animals' welfare is subject of testing by an external scientific research institute.
  • "The real problem we have is that they destroy a lot of drones," Hoogendoorn said. "It's a major cost of testing."
  • Another unknown is how the birds will fare in a crowd situation, he said.
  • 0A decision by police on whether to move ahead with using the eagles is expected by the end of the year.

Article Title: Australia is putting traffic lights in the ground because you're glued to your phone

URL: mashable.com  http://on.mash.to/1r41Fpm

Synopsis

  • For the average pedestrian, it's immensely hard to look up from an Instagram scroll when you need to, say, cross a four-lane freeway.
  • That's why the New South Wales state government is looking to trial ground level traffic lights at key crossings in Sydney, Australia from December.
  • Fed up with pedestrians who can't take their eyes off the screen, the government is obliged nevertheless to try and save their lives. It will implement a six month trial of the traffic lights at a cost of A$250,000.
  • "Pedestrians are less protected in a road crash, and are therefore more likely to be seriously injured or killed. This is why we need to create a road system that keeps them safe, and this includes situations when they may not be paying attention," Centre for Road Safety Executive Director Bernard Carlon told Mashable Australia.
  • The sites for the new under-foot traffic lights haven't yet been announced, but it's expected they will be installed in five places in Sydney's central business district.
  • The initiative was announced as part of the Towards Zero advertising campaign, which aims to highlight the human impact of crashes and road fatalities.
  • In 2015, 61 pedestrians were killed on NSW roads — a 49 percent increase from 2014.
  • "The lights are aimed at pedestrians using mobile phones who are not looking where they are walking," Carlon said. "They will serve as another layer of warning on top of existing lights and signals."
  • A similar initiative rolled out in Augsburg, Germany in April. The main goal there is to stop phone zombies from walking on train tracks.
  • Whatever it takes to help people walk while streaming Lemonade.

Article Title: This Android phone will put military-grade security in your pocket — for $14,000

URL: mashable.com

Synopsis

  • The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge costs less than $800. The new Solarin Android smartphone costs £9,500, which is about $14,000.
  • The team behind Solarin, Sirin Labs, announced the details on its super-expensive smartphone Tuesday, which the company said is designed for international businesspeople who want to keep sensitive information private. According to the company's press release, the phone uses the same communication encryption technology as the military.
  • That kind of security is enticing to some people, but $14,000 goes farther than encryption. Inside the Solarin is a base storage of 128GB, 4GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 810 2GHz eight-core processor. It also boasts five antennas and 24 LTE bands, reaching data speeds of up to 4.6 Gbps.
  • That all sounds pretty impressive, but it pretty much matches the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge's hardware specs. The S7 Edge actually has a better processor, the Snapdragon 820, although it comes up short on storage with only 32GB.
  • Not only that, Solarin is a 5.5-inch phone but weighs more than half a pound. That's pretty heavy.
  • Besides the built-in encryption, the difference-makers of Solarin are on the back. There's a 23.8-megapixel camera and fingerprint sensor surrounded by Italian leather, as well as a special security switch you can press to ensure maximum security during phone calls or while sending messages.
  • The phone clearly isn't made for the average person, Italian leather or not. For a smartphone that wouldn't perform much better than most new phones on the market, the $14,000 price tag hardly seem justifiable for those of us who are lacking super-cool secrets. But for people with high-value information on their smartphones, that high price could look pretty enticing compared to having valuable information stolen.
  • Whether or not the phone will succeed is questionable, because how many people have this kind of high-value information that they're willing to shell out that much money for? At least some people think it will succeed, given that Sirin Labs got $72 million in seed funding from a few people last year, including Moshe Hogeg, founder of the bafflingly limited messaging app

Article Title: Xbox One price drops to $299 just in time before unveiling slim Xbox One at E3

URL: Techcrunchhttp://wp.me/p1FaB8-5zXL

Synopsis

  • Microsoft just dropped the price of its gaming console. The Xbox One now costs $299 in the U.S. with a 500GB hard drive, or €299 in Europe. For $319, you get a 1TB hard drive. And bundles also get a $50 price cut.
  • Interestingly, this news comes right before E3. Microsoft is set to announce a new, slimmer Xbox One. Rumor has it that it should be 40 percent smaller and come with a 2TB hard drive. (Maybe Microsoft is going to drop the Blu-ray player?)
  • Next year, Microsoft could also announce a more powerful Xbox One. So the slim model is just an intermediary step to keep things fresh ahead of the holiday season later this year. Sony is also set to release a more powerful PlayStation 4 ‘Neo’ later this year.
  • Today’s price drop could be a way to clear up the inventory before making room for the slim Xbox One. Or maybe Microsoft wants to be more aggressive when it comes to pricing as the company is lagging behind Sony when it comes to consoles.
  • Sony recently announced 40 million sales for the PlayStation 4. Microsoft has stopped reporting unit sales, but VGChartz estimates that Microsoft has sold around 21 million Xbox One units so far
  • Either way, Microsoft is going to tell us more about the new Xbox One at its E3 conference on June 13th.

Article Title: Remember Myspace? A New Hack of the Site May Still Affect You and Millions

URL: Complex.com http://bit.ly/1TNzhju

Synopsis

  • Myspace announced a hacker has stolen username and password information from more 360 million accounts. The social network announced in a blog post that it found out about the hack before this past weekend. The hack reportedly stole Myspace users' login data including email addresses, Myspace usernames, passwords, and secondary passwords. The information was reportedly made available on an "online hacker forum."
  • According to LeakedSource, information was stolen from 360,213,024 accounts. However, those more likely to be affected by the hack are users with accounts created before June 2013. So, basically everyone.
  • "Email addresses, Myspace usernames, and Myspace passwords for the affected Myspace accounts created prior to June 11, 2013 on the old Myspace platform are at risk," wrote Myspace in the blog post.
  • Myspace explained it doubled down on its security measures after June 2013: "The compromised data is related to the period before those measures were implemented. We are currently utilizing advanced protocols including double salted hashes (random data that is used as an additional input to a one-way function that "hashes" a password or passphrase) to store passwords. Myspace has taken additional security steps in light of the recent report."
  • Myspace thinks a hacker known as "Peace" is responsible for the hack, as well as being responsible for recent hacks against Tumblr and LinkedIn.
  • The main concern is that users may be affected in places beyond their likely inactive Myspace accounts. That's why Myspace is advising users who may have used the same username and or password information from their Myspace accounts elsewhere to change their account information.
  • Myspace is working with law enforcement to investigate the hack.
  • The social network, beside being a shrine to your teen days and your Myspace angle selfies, once housed accounts from "Princess" Kim Kardashian and "tighty-whitey" wearing Tom Hardy.

Article Title:  Steam Machines: Valve's PC-like game consoles explained

URL: http://bit.ly/1Y829IH

Synopsis:

  1. Once upon a time, PC gaming was at the desk, console gaming was in the living room and never the two shall meet.
  2. That gaming fairytale is supposed to end now, as Valve has brought Steam to your HDTV, thanks to the Steam Machine.
  3. Still, Valves goals with Steam Machines and Steam OS are clear: bestow upon PC gaming the ease and accessibility that console jockeys already enjoy in a way that lets PC hardware makers continue to compete.
  4. And that puts Steam right at the center of it all, ready to vacuum up its cut of games sold on Steam Machines like its the Steam summer sale all year long.
  5. Each of these Steam Machines are essentially gaming PCs inside home theater-friendly cases that run on the Linux-based Steam OS and come with one Steam Controller.
  6. In the few reviews of Steam Machine candidates that weve published, we have run up against the same conundrum: do Steam Machines really make PC gaming that much simpler?
